Thank you for your interest in our graduate program!
We offer three degrees in informatics: the Master of Health Informatics (MHI), Master of Science (MS), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). For the large majority of applications, prospective students must submit an online application using the University of Minnesota Graduate School's Admissions System (see Express Application for exceptions). The HINF admissions committee will be able to access everything you enter and upload into your application as soon as you submit the application.
We admit MHI and MS students in both fall and spring. PhD students may only begin in the fall. We do not have any programs that begin in the summer. In 2019-2020, we had 23 MHI and 17 MS applicants, 15 MHI and 12 MS applicants were offered admission to the program and 8 MHI and 6 MS applicants matriculated. To review additional data from our past admissions cycles, please look at the Graduate School's website. MS students have an average graduation time of 2.3 years or 7 semesters and our MHI students have an average graduation time of 1.6 years or 5 semesters. 83% of our alumni have reported being employed in an informatics-related position within 1 year of graduating from the program.
Once your application is carefully reviewed by our admissions committee and your transcripts and any credentials (test reports, diploma copies, etc.) are authenticated by Graduate School officials, the Graduate School admissions office will email telling you a decision is in the application system. You will have to log in to the application system to access the official decision notification.
- February 15 (all applicants)
- June 15 (domestic MHI, MS applicants only)

The committee will review all applications after the deadline, regardless of the submission date.
