Thank you for your interest in our graduate program!

We offer three degrees in informatics: the Master of Health Informatics (MHI), Master of Science (MS), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). For the large majority of applications, prospective students must submit an online application using the University of Minnesota Graduate School's ApplyYourself (AY) Admissions System (see Express Application for exceptions). The HINF admissions committee will be able to access everything you enter and upload into your application as soon as you submit the application.

We admit MHI and MS students in both fall and spring. PhD students may only begin in the fall. We do not have any programs that begin in the summer.

Once your application is carefully reviewed by our admissions committee and your transcripts and any credentials (test reports, diploma copies, etc.) are authenticated by Graduate School officials, the Graduate School admissions office will email telling you a decision is in AY. You will have to log in to AY to access the official decision notification.

Be sure to read the application instructions page, the tuition and funding page, and the international students page, if applicable.

Express application

If you are currently enrolled or have been enrolled in the past in an HINF degree program, you may be eligible to apply using an express readmit if one of the following applies:

  • You are a returning student applying to the same major program to pursue the same degree (Readmission)
  • You are dropping from a PhD to an MS or MHI (Change of status)

Please be aware that express applications are subject to DGS approval.
