Dr. Constantin Aliferis leads the BMI organization, along with an experienced team of BMI experts, including over 80 BMI faculty and 49 staff out of the Academic Health Center Information Technology group (AHC-IT).

Dr. Aliferis is the Director of the Academic Health Center Office of Biomedical Health Informatics (BMHI), which is the single central entity responsible for all BMI activities at the University of Minnesota, including the CTSI BMI function as well as the Institute for Health Informatics (IHI), which is the academic home for scholarship in the area of BMI.

The BMHI Director and CTSI Director report to the Academic Health Center Vice President.

An Advisory Committee of AHC Deans provides strategic direction to the BMHI and its components.


  • The User Advisory Committee includes local stakeholders with close partnerships on the shared UMN campus, such as Fairview Health Services, the University of Minnesota Physicians (UMPhysicians) and the Masonic Cancer Center (MCC).
  • Community stakeholders (e.g., MN eHealth, Allina, HealthPartners, Park Nicollet, MN VA) have been organized into the External Partners Committee chaired by Andrew Nelson, CTSI Associate Director.
  • The CTSI External Advisory Board provides input from external BMI experts.
  • An external National Privacy Policy Review Board has been established to review policies and advise the BMI organization on privacy and security strategies through the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR).
