Nuri Alpay Temiz, PhD
Alpay is an assistant professor in the Institute for Health Informatics at the University of Minnesota. He has a broad background in computational biology and bioinformatics from structural calculations to large scale sequencing data analyses. He is currently focused on understanding mechanisms of tumor formation and metastasis through mutagenesis and gene expression. He is part of the team that showed for the first time that APOBEC3B DNA cytosine deaminase as an endogenous mutator in breast, lung, cervical, head and neck and bladder cancers. He has developed new methods to analyze Sleeping Beauty forward genetics screens in murine tumor models using both DNA sequencing and RNA sequencing, explored mechanisms mutational mechanisms leading to metastasis, and performed comparative analysis of osteosarcoma gene expression in humans, dogs and mice.
